It all began in the 1970s when Torgny Jansson, a mechanical design engineer and passionate woodworker, found himself frustrated with the lack of effective sharpening tools available. Determined to solve this problem, Torgny set out to create a modern version of the Swedish water-cooled grindstone, eventually leading to the birth of the first Tormek sharpening machine.

Tormek's early years were not without challenges. Convincing the market of the value of his innovative machine proved difficult, but Torgny’s vision was unwavering. By 1973, Tormek AB was founded, and within a few short years, the brand began to make its mark across Scandinavia and Europe. From the first model powered by an electric hand drill to the self-powered version introduced in 1981, Tormek has continuously evolved to meet the needs of woodworkers worldwide.
